Our picks by use case
-
Terminal agents that work with any model
OpenCode, Goose and Codewhale edit code and run commands in your terminal with the model provider you choose.
-
Agents inside your editor
Cline and Kilo Code work in VS Code and JetBrains IDEs and show each change before it lands; Zed is a fast editor with agents built in.
-
Agents from model makers
Codex CLI from OpenAI and Qwen Code from Alibaba's Qwen team are tuned for their own models, and both are Apache-licensed.
-
Many agents at once
Orca runs several agents side by side in separate Git worktrees, and OpenHands gives a team a self-hosted control center for agents and automations.
-
Managing providers and keys
CC Switch switches API providers and MCP settings across agents, and Claude Code Router routes each request to the model you pick.

How to choose an AI coding agent
Coding agents read your repository, edit files and run commands until a task is done. They differ mainly in where they run: in a terminal next to your code, inside an editor, or on servers as a team of agents. Around them a second group of tools manages model providers, runs several agents in parallel or reviews the pull requests they open.
Terminal, editor or server
Terminal agents suit developers who already work in a shell and want scripts and CI to use the same tool. Editor agents show each diff where you read code. Server-side agents such as OpenHands run in containers, so long tasks keep going while your laptop sleeps.
Model freedom
Vendor agents get the most out of their own models, while neutral agents let you switch providers, use local models, or pair cheap and strong models per task. If you already pay for ChatGPT or Claude, check which agents can use that subscription instead of separate API keys.
Control and review
Agents differ in how much they do before asking. Look for a planning or read-only mode, approval before commands run, and a record of what changed: OpenCode has a read-only plan agent, Cline asks before each step, and Codewhale lists every file, command and tool call.
License and maintenance
Most tools here use permissive licenses, but Crush uses the Functional Source License, which is not OSI open source. The field moves fast: Aider, Tabby and SWE-agent have nearly stopped, and Continue's repository is now read-only, so check the health score before you settle on one.
Costs
The agents are free, but tokens are not, and long autonomous tasks use a lot of them. Set a budget per task, use cheaper models for routine edits, and watch usage logs, which a local gateway such as Claude Code Router can show for every request.
