What is Shynet?

Shynet was created because most analytics tools hand visitors' data to a third party or rely on cookies that need consent banners. It tracks sessions, page views, referrers, locations and devices without cookies, works even without JavaScript through a pixel, and supports multiple users and sites. It is a Django application that runs with Docker and PostgreSQL.

Good fit if

  • You want a simple privacy-friendly dashboard written in Python.
  • You need tracking that also works when JavaScript is disabled.

Look elsewhere if

  • You want an active project: Shynet had no commits in the last 90 days. Umami and Plausible are busy.
  • You need detailed reports and goals: Matomo.

Before you adopt it

Shynet is Apache-2.0 and free. Development has stalled, so check that it still runs on current Python and Django versions before you deploy it.
