Matomo

The leading free and open analytics platform, formerly Piwik, which you install on your own PHP and MySQL server as a full Google Analytics replacement.

22k stars, 2.9k forks PHP On GitHub since March 2011

What is Matomo?

Matomo offers the depth of Google Analytics while you keep full ownership of the data: visits, acquisition channels, goals, ecommerce tracking, segments, custom reports and dashboards. You install it on your own web server with PHP and MySQL in a few minutes, copy the JavaScript tag into your sites, and data starts flowing. It can also import server logs and respects privacy settings such as Do Not Track and IP anonymization. Translations cover more than 50 languages.

Good fit if

  • You need detailed, GA-style reports while keeping data on your own servers.
  • You run on standard PHP hosting.
  • You need a tool with years of use in public institutions and large organizations.

Look elsewhere if

  • You want a simpler dashboard with fewer options: Plausible or Umami.
  • You analyze product usage per user: PostHog.

Before you adopt it

Matomo is GPL-3.0. Features such as heatmaps, session recordings and funnels come as paid premium plugins from the Matomo marketplace, outside this repository, and a hosted Matomo Cloud is available.
