What is Restreamer?

Restreamer from datarhei takes live video from OBS, cameras or hardware devices and publishes it through its own HLS, RTMP and SRT server, a built-in VideoJS player for your website, and restreams to platforms such as YouTube Live, Twitch, Facebook and Vimeo. A wizard sets up sources, and FFmpeg does the processing, with hardware encoding on Raspberry Pi, Nvidia CUDA and Intel VAAPI. It includes Let's Encrypt certificates, viewer and bandwidth limits, a documented REST API and Prometheus metrics, and stores no audience data.

Good fit if

  • You want to stream to several platforms at once without a paid multistreaming service.
  • You need a camera-to-website livestream on a Raspberry Pi with a simple interface.

Look elsewhere if

  • You want an actively maintained streaming server: MediaMTX or SRS.
  • You need a channel with built-in chat for viewers: Owncast.

Before you adopt it

Restreamer is Apache-2.0 and free of paid parts. Activity is slowing: no commits in the last three months, and the latest release is from September 2024, so check the active alternatives above. It runs as a Docker image on Linux, or on macOS and Windows through Docker Desktop.
