What is NextChat?

NextChat, formerly ChatGPT Next Web, is a chat front end that you point at your own API keys. It deploys for free to Vercel with one click, runs as a web app, and also ships as a compact desktop client of about 5 MB for Linux, Windows and macOS. Conversations are stored locally in the browser, and prompt templates, called masks, let you create and share chat tools. It also supports MCP servers when enabled.

Good fit if

  • You want a personal chat interface on your own API keys with almost no setup.
  • You prefer that chat history stays in your browser rather than on a server.

Look elsewhere if

  • You need a multi-user service with accounts and permissions: LibreChat or Open WebUI.
  • You want an actively developed client: NextChat had only a dozen commits in the last 90 days. Cherry Studio and Chatbox are busier.

Before you adopt it

NextChat is MIT-licensed. The company behind it now promotes its hosted service and an enterprise edition, and development of this repository has slowed.
