What is LibreChat?

LibreChat looks like ChatGPT but connects to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Azure, AWS Bedrock, Mistral, OpenRouter, local servers and more, and lets users switch models within one conversation. It adds agents with MCP tools and skills, a code interpreter, artifacts, message search, presets and file chat through a separate RAG service. Accounts, roles and single sign-on through OpenID Connect make it suitable for organizations. The interface is translated into 36 languages.

Good fit if

  • You want a ChatGPT-like service for a company on your own infrastructure.
  • You need an MIT-licensed project you can modify and rebrand.
  • Your users want agents and tools, not only plain chat.

Look elsewhere if

  • You want a lighter install: the compose file runs about six services, including MongoDB, Meilisearch and PostgreSQL. Open WebUI is simpler.
  • You want a personal desktop app: Cherry Studio or Chatbox.

Before you adopt it

LibreChat is MIT-licensed, and nothing in the repository is paywalled. A Helm chart is included. Most commits come from a handful of core developers.
