What is µTask?

µTask models a process as a YAML template: a set of inputs and a graph of actions with their dependencies. It runs each action asynchronously, works around transient errors and stores an encrypted trace of every intermediate state until the task completes. Examples from its authors include issuing TLS certificates when a Kubernetes ingress appears and setting up accounts for a new team member. Custom actions are written as Go plugins, and only PostgreSQL is required to run it.

Good fit if

  • You need auditable, encrypted records of automated internal processes.
  • You want declarative YAML workflows with human input steps.

Look elsewhere if

  • You want an actively developed engine: there were no commits in the past 90 days. Kestra and Windmill are busy projects.
  • You prefer workflows defined in code: Temporal.

Before you adopt it

µTask is BSD-3-Clause, published by OVH, without paid parts. Activity has stopped recently, so check the issue tracker before relying on it for new work.
