What is Raneto?

Raneto keeps all content as Markdown files on disk; there is no database. It searches file names and contents, lets signed-in users edit pages in a browser editor, and is configured through config/config.js or environment variables for the content folder, site title, base URL, authentication and locale. It is meant for documentation sites and internal knowledge bases that stay light. The interface has translations for 15 locales.

Good fit if

  • You want docs stored as plain files you can also manage with Git.
  • You need a quick internal wiki with basic edit protection and nothing more.

Look elsewhere if

  • You need user roles, comments and real-time collaboration: BookStack or Wiki.js.
  • You want to publish Markdown notes as a static site: Quartz.

Before you adopt it

Raneto uses the MIT license, and nothing in the repository is paid. Activity is slowing: no commits in the last three months, with the latest release, 0.18.1, from March 2026. A Docker image is available. Set a session secret of at least 32 characters and admin credentials before exposing it.
