What is Navidrome?

Navidrome scans your music folders, reads the tags you have curated and streams the collection to its web interface or to any app that speaks the Subsonic API. It handles very large libraries, plays almost any audio format and converts files on the fly per user or player, including to Opus. Each user keeps their own playlists, favourites and play counts, and the server picks up new files as they appear. It ships as a single binary for macOS, Linux and Windows, including the Raspberry Pi, and as a Docker image.

Good fit if

  • You want your own music streaming service on a small server or a Raspberry Pi.
  • You already like a Subsonic-compatible player on your phone.
  • Your household needs another language: the interface is translated into 33.

Look elsewhere if

  • You also want films and series on the same server: Jellyfin.
  • You listen mostly to audiobooks and podcasts: Audiobookshelf.

Before you adopt it

Navidrome is GPL-3.0; it moved from AGPL-3.0 to GPL-3.0 in January 2020. There are no paid parts in the repository, and partner hosting providers share revenue with the project. One developer writes about four fifths of the commits, so the project depends heavily on its lead maintainer. The README warns that the master branch can be unstable, so install from releases.
