Hasura

An engine that puts a GraphQL API with fine-grained access control on top of your databases, and fires webhooks on data changes.

32.1k stars, 3k forks TypeScript On GitHub since June 2018

What is Hasura?

Hasura connects to existing databases and generates a GraphQL API with permission rules, so front ends can query data without a hand-written backend. Version 2, the current stable engine, works with PostgreSQL and can call webhooks when rows change. The newer v3 engine powers Hasura DDN, adds data connectors for PostgreSQL, MongoDB, ClickHouse and SQL Server, and lets you add business logic with TypeScript, Python and Go connector SDKs. The monorepo holds both versions.

Good fit if

  • You want an instant, permission-aware GraphQL API over an existing database.
  • Your team writes front ends and would rather not maintain CRUD backend code.

Look elsewhere if

  • You need a gateway in front of REST services rather than an API over data: Kong.

Before you adopt it

The engine is Apache-2.0, but install-manifests/enterprise/ covers the paid enterprise edition, and Hasura DDN is the company's hosted offering. Contributors sign a CLA. The repository is large, so the README suggests a shallow clone. Docker Compose files set it up with PostgreSQL.
