What is Anytype?

Anytype treats everything you create as an object whose type and relations you define yourself, close to building small apps on your own data model. Data is stored offline-first on your devices and synced peer-to-peer or through Anytype's network, always end-to-end encrypted. Spaces can be shared with others for collaboration. This repository is the desktop client for macOS, Windows and Linux.

Good fit if

  • You want Notion-style flexibility without trusting a company with readable data.
  • You want to design your own object types and relations.

The Any Source Available License is not open source by the OSI definition: it allows non-commercial use, and commercial use only on approved networks. Contributors sign a CLA. One developer writes nearly all of the client code.

Anytype license: is it open source?

Anytype uses Any Source Available License. It is source-available, not an OSI-approved open-source license: the code is public, but the license restricts how you may use it, usually commercially. Contributors sign a contributor license agreement, which lets the owner relicense their work later.
